Monolithic redesign of the Model One
A three week project tasked with redesigning and creating a working model of the classic Henry Kloss Tivoli Model One Table Radio.
I decided that the perfect way to create stance and honor to this little monophonic joy was to embed it within a monolithic obelisk.
The three inch full-range speaker sits at the top of the three foot tall obelisk, attached directly to a resonant acrylic baffle, amplifying the sound.
The internal cavity is designed to absorb the rear projection, funnelling it towards the base-port at the bottom of the baffle, providing the best bass response from this small achiever.
Since the obelisk is a simple form, great care was placed on the proportions, reflecting the original Model One design.
The rear face of the obelisk houses the controls along the top edge, and ports along the bottom
The ports include a line-in, supporting iPods, as well as line out and headphone use.
When in FM mode, a light shines through the otherwise opaque front baffle to show the current frequency. Sliding the tuner up and down moves this light through the range of frequencies. The light becomes brighter as the signal becomes stronger, helping to hone in on a clear station.
