Experimental Form – A series of experimental products

A collection of small assignments in creating form and products pushing concepts of process and fabrication. These pieces are experiments in parametric form, generative form, formed fabrication and 3D printing.

Generative Form - Fruit Platter

Fruit Platter uses a packed circle pattern generated from a small piece of custom software which produces a laser-cut or CNC template. The design is then cut into blank platters. This process allows for an array of variety within a consistent form language, each piece being manufactured yet custom and one of a kind.

The nature of the circle packing algorithm leads to a minimal-weight maximum-strength design, and provides a great deal of airflow to keep fruit from spoiling or bruising.

Formed Fabrication - Waveform Organizer

The waveform organizer is made from a formed acrylic slat weaving through a molded plywood form. The resulting intersections create compartmentalized shelves and pockets for storage and display.

The two waveforms do not touch – the acrylic is suspended by polished steel hardware.

3D Information Design - Geo Type

Generated from hand-drawn typography, geo type illustrates the world's population density per country, shown as each country extruded outward from the globe. Each country is represented by it's name, in it's native language, drawn to fill it's borders.

The piece is generated using Processing and triangle. Each country is drawn in Illustrator using a pen tablet and saved as an SVG file. The custom Processing application reads an excel sheet of population statistics per country and the collection of SVG illustrations and generates the STL file ready for print.

Shown here is the western hemisphere, printed using a z-corp 3D printer.
